DESARROLLA’S TEAMS COMPLETE THE FULL RENOVATION OF A SINGLE-FAMILY HOME THROUGH A RADICAL REINTERPRETATION OF THE EXISTING VOLUME

In the heart of the traditional core of Mudelos, in the Concello de O Carballiño, the Casa Grande de Mudelos has just embarked on a new chapter that will come to life through a comprehensive restoration project that goes far beyond the mere physical recovery of a ruined property. The intervention designed by the PLP Atelier team and to be carried out by our own teams proposes, above all, a reconciliation between past and present. A journey conceived to restore meaning, use, and architectural dignity to a building deeply rooted in the memory of its surroundings.La Casa Grande de Mudelos consists of two historic volumes —building A and building B— linked by a pre-existing passageway that is set to become the guiding thread of the project. Both structures, severely deteriorated after years of neglect, will now be integrated into a single residence of more than 470 square meters of built area. A building laid out with a natural, coherent flow between ground floors, first floors, and attic spaces.
The project does not seek to homogenize what is diverse, but rather to create a dialogue between two complementary architectures, each with its own character.Volume B faithfully reflects traditional Galician architecture, with a direct relationship to the small square that defines its south façade and a domestic scale that anchors the whole to the historic urban fabric.Facing it, Building A presents itself as a residential property of greater presence. A volume that reveals subtle references to the casas indianas: the west-facing gallery supported by granite pillars, the mansard roof, and the carefully composed façades. At Casa Grande de Mudelos, these distinctive elements will not only be preserved, but will become true focal points of the project. The rehabilitation strategy is based on a careful reading of the place and of the vernacular architecture. The granite masonry walls will be cleaned and repointed following respectful criteria. All of this work will restore their original texture, making the constructive differences between floors clearly legible. The gallery and the mansard roof will be rebuilt, faithfully reproducing their original layout and morphology, avoiding any contrived gesture or element foreign to the building’s history. Everything new will be incorporated with clarity, without forced mimicry, yet always with respect.

Its integration with the surrounding context does not prevent a contemporary reading of the materials, spaces, and proportions, in a home that stands out for its refined sobriety and dynamic interior. In the rear garden, a small patio with a pool brings a sense of calm to the overall building, extending the living space outward and offering a natural transition between the domestic interior and life in the open air. This connection reinforces the intimate and sophisticated character of the project, designed to be enjoyed in every season of the year. This rehabilitation not only brings new life to an old home, but reimagines it with a contemporary, functional, and emotional language. A house that is no longer just a place to live, but a spatial experience that speaks of light, proportion, and construction quality.Ultimately, a project whose execution we have thoroughly enjoyed, and for which we would like to sincerely thank the developers for their trust in our work.Visit us at the construction company’s headquarters in Vigo.
