The Camino de Santiago continues to grow, both in the number of pilgrims and in its international reach. In recent years, many routes that had fallen into oblivion have been brought back to life. But if there is one route which, after the French Way, stands out for its tradition and popularity, it is the Portuguese Way. At the gateway to this route into Santiago, the Hotel Peregrino, an eight-storey architectural landmark, was built in 1967, and its comprehensive refurbishment has just been completed in record time by Desarrolla Obras y Servicios. From the moment it opened, this hotel became a symbol thanks to its location and scale, but also because it was the first hotel building in the city to feature an outdoor swimming pool. And for several years it was home to the nightclub Black, one of the key venues of Santiago’s nightlife scene in the 1980s.Over its six decades of history, the property has therefore been an architectural icon, a place of rest for thousands of visitors, and a true driving force in the city’s urban life. The hotel’s current owners, the company Marlolan SL and the entrepreneur Juan Carlos Rodríguez Cebrián, decided to make a strong commitment to enhancing the value of this asset, which will from now on be managed by Grupo Hotusa. The aim of the refurbishment of Hotel Peregrino carried out by Desarrolla Obras y Servicios has been to restore all of its former splendour. This goal has been achieved in just five months of construction work. From now on, it will once again take the place it deserves in the heart of the Xacobeo Holy Year within Santiago’s tourist accommodation offering, as its reopening is scheduled for the middle of this month. To this end, extensive renovation work has been undertaken both inside and outside the building, based on a project by Estudio de Arquitectura Fernández Carballada y Asociados. The aim was to improve the hotel’s accessibility and facilities, while also redesigning the façade and exterior elements to make them more attractive.

Renovation of Hotel Peregrino, accessibility and comfort

The fact is that a building with more than 60 years of history required a comprehensive renovation to adapt its spaces and make them accessible to everyone. A pool lift has therefore been installed to ensure that people with reduced mobility can enjoy the pleasure of taking a swim in the heart of Santiago. All of the hotel’s bathrooms have also been refurbished, replacing the bathtubs—which made access difficult for many guests—with spacious showers.Back outside, the car park has been redesigned to improve access for both vehicles and people, and all exterior entrances have been modernised. In the same vein, the emergency staircase—absolutely crucial in terms of safety—has been repaired. The renovation of Hotel Peregrino was also aimed at ensuring that the building is energy-efficient and maintains comfortable temperatures throughout the year. To this end, a ventilated façade with aluminium panel insulation has been installed, and the roof has been thermally insulated. In addition, all interior systems have been renewed and upgraded with more energy-efficient heating solutions. In terms of comfort, the new lighting system implemented will enhance interior brightness, showcasing the establishment’s interior design and turning its different areas into warmer, more welcoming spaces. This work was carried out by interior designer Carla Galante, from CAAI Studio.

An ambitious rehabilitation project that has equipped this 297-bed hotel with every modern service and comfort.

A FACELIFT IN THE RAINY CITY

The effects of the passing of time and humidity had become evident in the building. That is why the renovation of Hotel Peregrino has focused heavily on modernising and updating the façade and exterior elements. To carry out this work, the Desarrolla Obras y Servicios team has removed and replaced the exterior joinery, and refurbished the numerous balconies, replacing the existing brick railings with new glass ones, far more contemporary and elegant. The existing pitched roof has also been removed and replaced with a flat roof that will become a leisure area with a café and spectacular views of Santiago Cathedral. The central element of this refurbishment has been the renovation of the building’s façade, a complex task that the constructora team has executed with the utmost care. The aim of this renovation has been to transform the hotel’s image and bring it in line with the present day.To this end, all elements incompatible with the new exterior design of the property have been demolished. For the final finishes, aluminium composite panel trays were used, together with white or grey lacquered aluminium finishes. In this way, the building now projects an image of modernity to everyone entering the city along the Portuguese Way.Thus restoring all the shine to one of the best-known hotels in northern Spain.Visit us at our head office in Santiago de Compostela.
