Polishing the past
The project carried out by the studio Diaz & Diaz Arquitectos involved completely demolishing the interior while preserving the protected elements. In this way, the Desarrolla rehabilitation team gave the façade a full makeover, restored the entrance hall, and rebuilt the staircases. This brought back to these valuable elements the splendor of early 20th‑century Madrid, while placing them at the service of 21st‑century Madrid, with modern, welcoming interiors.Of particular significance was the complete restoration process of the protected façade. This required integrating it seamlessly into the new building constructed behind it. Thus, on the second to fifth floors, all the damaged or missing construction elements of the façade were replaced: plasterwork, cornices, balconies, railings…Meanwhile, on the first floor, which had been altered by previous work, a historical documentation effort to faithfully reconstruct it was carried out, reinstating the façade openings with the same arrangement and dimensions as on the other floors. Finally, on the ground floor, the existing openings were preserved, once it was confirmed that they were original.More than two centuries of architectural history encapsulated in a single building which, in turn, had already replaced a construction erected in 1865.A chain of transformations from 19th‑century urban planning to the global Madrid of today. A process that mirrors the transformation experienced by the Spanish dairy industry, from the small farms of 200 years ago to major global companies such as Reny Picot.Over the years, Desarrolla Obras y Servicios has stood out as a specialist company in rehabilitation, capable of combining meticulous respect for history with cutting‑edge architecture. This building, brought back to life on Calle Alcalá, is a prime example of that.
