Desarrolla completes the new Reny Picot offices in Madrid

Desarrolla Obras y Servicios has restored a historic 1900 building on Alcalá Street, which had fallen into ruin, transforming it into the new headquarters of Reny Picot. The project, developed together with Díaz & Díaz Arquitectos, preserved the protected elements —the façade, entrance hall, and staircases— restoring them with historical rigor, while completely rebuilding the interior with a modern, functional, and efficient design.

The buildings in the centers of major cities are, in themselves, historical documents. Witnesses to the passage of time. Desarrolla Obras y Servicios has just completed the works of rehabilitation, refurbishment and change of use of a building from 1900 that had fallen into a state of ruin. The property, whose façade has been preserved and restored, now houses the new offices of Reny Picot, a multinational milk company. This marks the beginning of a new and vibrant chapter in its history. The building, located on Calle Alcalá in Madrid, had undeniable value despite its ruined condition. And not only because it stands in the heart of Spain’s capital, but also thanks to its valuable protected architectural elements: the façade, the entrance hall and the stairwell, all of them in an advanced state of deterioration. Its transformation into the headquarters of Reny Picot therefore represented, for Desarrolla, both a major challenge and, at the same time, a highly inspiring venture that has now been successfully completed.

Polishing the past

The project carried out by the studio Diaz & Diaz Arquitectos involved completely demolishing the interior while preserving the protected elements. In this way, the Desarrolla rehabilitation team gave the façade a full makeover, restored the entrance hall, and rebuilt the staircases. This brought back to these valuable elements the splendor of early 20th‑century Madrid, while placing them at the service of 21st‑century Madrid, with modern, welcoming interiors.Of particular significance was the complete restoration process of the protected façade. This required integrating it seamlessly into the new building constructed behind it. Thus, on the second to fifth floors, all the damaged or missing construction elements of the façade were replaced: plasterwork, cornices, balconies, railings…Meanwhile, on the first floor, which had been altered by previous work, a historical documentation effort to faithfully reconstruct it was carried out, reinstating the façade openings with the same arrangement and dimensions as on the other floors. Finally, on the ground floor, the existing openings were preserved, once it was confirmed that they were original.More than two centuries of architectural history encapsulated in a single building which, in turn, had already replaced a construction erected in 1865.A chain of transformations from 19th‑century urban planning to the global Madrid of today. A process that mirrors the transformation experienced by the Spanish dairy industry, from the small farms of 200 years ago to major global companies such as Reny Picot.Over the years, Desarrolla Obras y Servicios has stood out as a specialist company in rehabilitation, capable of combining meticulous respect for history with cutting‑edge architecture. This building, brought back to life on Calle Alcalá, is a prime example of that.

Open to the heart of Madrid

The people of Madrid take pride in their city being open to everyone, a welcoming metropolis built by people from every corner of the country. Just as Madrid opens itself to people, this ruined building brought back to life in the heart of the capital seeks to open itself to the city.First and foremost, and as could not be otherwise, it showcases its excellent location. It is not only set in the very core of a city that never stops, but it also stands next to a historic building, the former Banco Mercantil e Industrial (BMI), designed by one of the most important Spanish architects of the 20th century, the Galician Antonio Palacios. Today, this building houses offices of the Comunidad de Madrid.Meanwhile, the other building it adjoins is similar in character, but was in a much better state of preservation. Thanks to the study carried out, it was possible to restore the façade with precision. The renovation has been carried out with full respect for its surroundings, carefully treating the party walls of the neighboring buildings and adding a new sixth floor, which did not exist in the original structure. This recessed penthouse floor conceals the party walls and opens, through a spectacular terrace, onto the center of the city. The result is a space of unparalleled charm, from which you can see, hear, and feel Madrid in all its splendor. With the completion of the new Reny Picot offices, Desarrolla brings to a close a deeply inspiring project that succeeded in reviving a ruined building in the heart of Spain’s capital. A project that highlights the company’s guiding principles: respect for history, fusion between heritage and cutting-edge design, and the creation of modern, welcoming spaces…Discover our work at www.desarrolla.es.Visit us at our Madrid headquarters.
