Desarrolla is carrying out the restoration of a Rationalist building in A Coruña

Desarrolla has carried out the full refurbishment and extension of a rationalist building from 1950 on Fernando Macías Street in A Coruña, preserving its protected façade and adapting it to current needs. The project, designed by architects Antonio Freire and Emmanuel Vincent, comprises seven apartments with storage rooms and parking, and stands out for incorporating an innovative geothermal system, unique in the city and a pioneering solution in Spain in the residential sector.

The project combines historical preservation, energy efficiency, and refined interior design, resulting in modern, comfortable homes that are fully aligned with contemporary architecture.

Cities and people’s lives have changed enormously since 1950. That year, A Coruña was buzzing with Deportivo, which finished the season as runner-up in the First Division. And on Fernando Macías street, right in the heart of the city, a rationalist building was rising: five upper floors, a ground floor and a basement. The architectural movement that inspired the design of this central property, followed by visionaries such as Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer, championed simplicity and functionality. With that same spirit, Desarrolla has carried out the comprehensive refurbishment and extension of the building to bring its original objectives into the new millennium.Anyone who has strolled through the centre of A Coruña will have enjoyed the character that its buildings radiate. In them we can see the different architectural movements of recent centuries reflected. That is why restoring this historic heritage is essential for everyone. The project, designed by architects Antonio Freire and Emmanuel Vincent, included the restoration and conservation of the façade of this rationalist building, protected for its historical value. The property comprises seven south-facing homes, two of them with a terrace. Each apartment also has a storage room, and three parking spaces have been created.

A state-of-the-art building in Spain

One of the distinctive features of this project is that the building is equipped with a geothermal system at the forefront of energy efficiency. In fact, it is the only residential building in A Coruña with this technology and one of the first in Spain.Geothermal energy harnesses the temperature of the ground to climatize buildings and homes. The system relies on the use of heat pumps and an exchanger to provide heating for the homes. In winter, this technology absorbs heat from the ground and releases it into the building, while in summer the process is reversed: it extracts heat from the building and transfers it to the ground. As for the interior design, every detail and finish has been meticulously taken care of to offer residents welcoming homes, where they can truly feel at ease. The flooring is finished in wood in all rooms, except in the bathrooms and kitchen area, where elegant tiles have been installed. In short, a meticulous and refined piece of work that brings a property of great historical value into the present.Discover our work at www.desarrolla.es.Visit us at our headquarters in A Coruña.
