Transforming a space to tell a new story

Desarrolla Obras y Servicios has carried out the full refurbishment of a commercial unit in a century-old building in Valencia to transform it into the Clínica de Traumatología Darder, following the design of Hernández Arquitectos. The project involved the complete demolition of the interior to create a modern, functional space of 160 m², featuring a reception area, waiting room, medical consulting rooms, and an X-ray room.

The project focused on enhancing energy efficiency through new installations, a suspended ceiling, tailored climate control, and carefully designed lighting that provides comfort. In addition, the façade was renewed with refined materials, large windows, and a backlit sign, resulting in a contemporary clinic that combines design, functionality, and respect for the urban environment.

TRANSFORMING A SPACE TO TELL A NEW STORY

DESARROLLA REFURBISHES A RETAIL SPACE IN A CENTURY-OLD BUILDING IN VALENCIA TO CREATE A MODERN TRAUMATOLOGY CLINIC

There are properties that, like cats, have multiple lives. Century-old buildings that have, in a way, become silent witnesses to history. In one of them, located in Valencia and built in 1905, Desarrolla Obras y Servicios has undertaken the task of refurbishing a commercial unit to transform it into the modern Traumatology Clinic Darder. The project by the studio Hernández Arquitectos started from the premise that it was necessary to demolish the entire interior of the unit in order to build the clinic. With this in mind, the Desarrolla team removed the flooring, partitions, ceiling, and all the old installations. In this way, starting from the open-plan 160-square-metre ground floor, a completely different space from the original was designed. In its new layout, built with plasterboard partitions, it features a spacious reception area and a welcoming waiting room. The goal? To ensure that patients feel comfortable and at ease before being seen by the professionals at Clínica Darder. As for the medical areas, the building includes an office, two large consultation rooms, and an X-ray room. Naturally, it also has restrooms for clients and staff, a staff room, and a circulation area that structures the clinic.

Energy efficiency

As this is an older building, the premises originally had a ceiling height of 3.80 metres. To lower it, ensuring optimal conditions for medical work and improving energy efficiency, a suspended ceiling has been installed. All the walls have also been lined and complete plumbing, sanitation and electrical systems have been carried out, the latter with a three‑phase supply to meet the requirements of the X‑ray room. The aim has been to fully refurbish the premises in a comprehensive way.The project placed particular emphasis on the new lighting of the spaces, which turns the clinic into a comfortable environment, creating a pleasant and calm atmosphere. To achieve this, pendant lamps have been installed in the entrance area, creating a strong first impression. Wall lights have been added in the corridors and waiting room to provide a greater sense of privacy and relaxation. Finally, arkoslight have been installed in the consulting rooms to achieve the optimal light level for professionals to work. The design is based on interior design that is both practical and elegant.Regarding air conditioning and ventilation, Desarrolla Obras y Servicios has complied with RITE regulations, ensuring the energy efficiency of the premises. The system is therefore designed to temper outside air during the most extreme times of the year, consistently maintaining a mild and pleasant indoor climate.

The treatment of the façade

But the project did not only focus on the interior of the premises. Special attention was also devoted to the exterior. Since the clinic is located in a historic building in the very heart of Valencia, it received particularly careful treatment. The façade, for example, features a large 3.05-metre iron door and a beautiful, elegant wall clad in porcelain stoneware. It also has fixed picture windows that allow natural light to flood into the clinic, enhancing its outstanding artificial lighting. To maximise visual impact, a backlit sign has been installed, visible from anywhere along this central, busy street.Ultimately, Desarrolla Obras y Servicios has refurbished a century-old premises to transform it into a cutting-edge trauma clinic, equipped with the finest technology and a modern, functional aesthetic.Discover our work at www.desarrolla.esVisit us at our Valencia headquarters.
